They didn't!
But seriously, even if Nintendo did pioneer 3D, it's only a sustaining innovation (like Sony's move to CD's with the PS1), so it'd be nothing to brag about. These things are natural improvements, unlike say, the standard controller to the Wiimote.
As for giving the 3DS the thumbs up, we haven't even seen it yet! I personally can't comment until I see it in action, I will say that I'm hoping for more than just a DS with 3D visuals.
