Great sales are not a flawless indicator of overall game quality. The problem with CoD is that it's become lost in its own hype, COD4 was fantastic and offered brilliant multiplayer, while MW2 got too big for its own good and lost alot of that. It ended up just being a mess.
I'm not so sure everyone dislikes Treyarch, but I think the general consensus is that they aren't as good a developer as Infinity Ward though that's probably because they hadn't left WW2 yet. With Black Ops that view of them will probably change, though I wasn't that blown away by the trailer.
