Get them from your doctor, or sexual health clinic. they'll be free. I used to get bags of them at uni, they're exactly the same as in the shops, only they're free and you usually get a nice range of different types (this is the UK though)
love the fact you have to wait until your houses are empty! that takes me back... now i own my own flat, its a lot easier.
p.s. have fun with it. first time is always a little complicated, but practice makes perfect!
