I think they are.
You see , Japanese company's are looking completely different to their company.
They plan everything into many more years to make a profit. Western company's are looking to make a profit every year. They are looking to the next financial year.
The Japanese are looking to the next decade.
The Ps3 didn't sold as well as they hoped it would be , but it did it's job.

They used the Ps3 to give HD and Blu-ray a boost. The Ps3 was an investment to Sony.

They also didn't expected that they would make profit the first 2/3 years of it's life time.
They want to let many more devisions of Sony to profit from the Ps3.
Now they are well on the way to make Blu-ray the new standard , it helps push Bravia sales , Blu-ray player sales , it will help the movie devision of Sony , it will boost their sound system sales.

Because without the Ps3 , blu-ray would never be the standard in the next 10/15 years. I think within 4 years , BR is the new standard.
The Japanese business thought's are way different than the goals , thoughts and strategies of the western market.
Sony uses their devisions to work as one company to let them work together on the long term and they will make huge profits as one company.

Keep in mind that the Japanese are probaly the best economics and traders in the world. They where much more settled and civilized than we 'the western world' were 1400 years ago espessialy on the economic development.

Also , they set the basis for an online gaming community and much more for the next 10/15 year with the Playstation Network with the Ps3.
They won't have to develop a new network for the next 10/15 years. They can use it on their laptops , music players (like iTunes) , mobile phones , next gen internet TV's , next gen consoles and other portable gaming devices.
Sony just set the basics for the next few decades.

Also , 891 million isn't much for a company that has estimited 120-150 billion dollar.
That's like having 130 dollar , and then you lose 90 cent.
And the thing is , if the planning works , you would make that 90 cents you lost back many more times in the next 10 years.

So the bottom line ,
Sony is most likely happy with the Ps3. Things aren't going like it whas really planned (Blu-ray doesn't get the new standard as soon as they hoped and Ps3 sales where expected to be bigger) but the basis for the next decade is almost set for Sony.
