In American biology classes pre-60's, students were taught that black skin was a dominant trait while white skin was recessive. Thus, a white person is from two white parents while two black parents or one black and one white parent would produce a black person.

Even though this was a long time ago, the idea still lingers, not to memtion that many of the people taught this are still alive.
