I have always thought this as well. You get a lot of mildly/severely homophobic people commenting on how many gays there are, but when you look at the number compared to total active users it really isn't a large percentage even. Gay bashers are used to being able to directly and indirectly drive homosexuals off their forum by making the place generally hostile towards them. Failing that you get more willing to open up as it doesn't really change anything, and does add a level of comfort for whatever reasons. Combine this with the aforementioned severe homophobes going off about how many gays there are and the perception becomes that there are many more than there are.
