My friend Xbox 360 died on him a few weeks ago before he bough Mass Effect 2. Told him to return the game and get it for PC but he just going to buy a new Xbox 360. New Jasper edition should fix that problem hopefully. Anyway why bother to bring this up? Because Microsoft clearly rushed the product. They wanted to be a year ahead of the competition and just bunched up cost efficient materials and approved the design without good testing.

PS3 in turn suffered from the opposite spectrum, it was released a year later with hardware that was ahead of its time, costing more to produce than to sell. Right at this moment we finally catching up (Time wise) to the potential of the hardware, and it clearly shows. But honestly, the only reason PS3 getting so much attention now is because PS3 slim made it affordable and the install base is growing drastically.

Yes, I'm aware that some exclusive games are influential in sales, but lets just say exclusive of one console and another cancel each other out.

I expect Microsoft next strategy to be a price cut on new slim version of the console. That should balance out sales between PS3 and Xbox 360. Why? because the only thing Microsoft and Nintendo have an edge on the Sony this particular GEN is the hardware production cost. No, I'm not starting flame war. x.x

Remnant but Microsoft already sells the cheapest HD console. Will another price cut make a lot of difference? Arcade is even cheaper than Wii. If there is a 360 slim version available later this year I expect boost in sales but not for long.

In your first sentence you confirmed something what quite often happens. Xbox breaks and people go to get another one. This is well reflected in SW sales. I recently read some comments on Xbox 360 on amazon.co.uk. Roughly 1/2 owners said that this was their new 2nd Xbox.
