If English so closely resembles French, why is it still classified as a "Germanic" language and not a "Romantic"?
That's the thing, you can look up words that are close to French, but you can do the same for German:
House - Hause
Attention - Achtung
Wonderful - Wunderbar
Drink - Trink
Who - Wo
Where - Wer
Although, the last two examples are mixed-up in that "Wo" really means where, and "Wer" really means who, but time will do that.
Even words such as "Photosynthesis", "Resurrection", and "Telephone" have Latin and Greek roots.
Bottom Line: The English language is best described as a "soup" that contains many "ingredients"
