It was too random for my tastes. That having been said though, I did meet one of my flatmates-to-be there. Rented a much better place to share with him and another friend the following year, only slightly more expensive but better part of town, a pretty decent sized room for everyone and not sharing kitchen/bathroom with too many people.
You can always be social and meet people at college, didn't find I needed actually living with a random sample.
