I doubt Call of Duty gets many sales from its local multiplayer, it's pretty lackluster. Halo and Gears are the local shooters, really.
@OP - competitive multiplayer, what does that mean, exactly? Is that as opposed to co-operative? I think co-operative multiplayer could actually be more popular, but nobody has really tried to build a high budget game around it. Take Gears of War 2, for example - its horde mode is the most popular online mode, even though it isn't exactly rich in content. I recall the Zombie mode from CoD:WaW being pretty popular as well.
As for multiplayer games outselling single player games, that's been obvious for a long time now. That has nothing to do with the X360 itself.
