This line was from the VGC review of Metro 2033, the review confirms that the game does not feature multiplayer.
As for Splinter Cell: Conviction, you're kinda right. It doesn't have the competitive multiplayer modes you find in most shooters but it does have a solid multiplayer community that focuses a lot on co-op. from the looks of it, SCC will have decent legs in the long run. I would definitely not call its sales underwhelming.
