Just tell them that it's been used a lot. If you imply some sort of sudden defect, they may be suspicious. Switch the TV on and demonstrate what's wrong with it, if you know the age of the appliance, mention it (that'll be a big factor), and also mention that the defects make it unbearable to use it.
