Just tell them that it's been used a lot. If you imply some sort of sudden defect, they may be suspicious. Switch the TV on and demonstrate what's wrong with it. If you know the age of the appliance, that will help your case, and also mention that the defects make it unbearable to use. I'm sure they'll understand (as long as you don't try to deceive them).
