If you live in the UK (possibly elsewhere, not sure on the situation) I would advise you to buy the points with a credit card through the shop channel itself if possible.... because that way you can buy them for £7 per 1000. In stores they only sell "nintendo points" now.... which you can use on Wii AND DS... but if like me you only have the Wii, paying £10 for 1000 is annoying.
Anyhow, I can't say I have enjoyed the VC hugely, but I am just not interested in playing old 2D games much, at least not the ones i have tried so far. However:
F-Zero X was worth it - fast paced futuristic racer - 1000 points
Super Mario 64 - 1000 points
Legend of Zelda: Majora'sMask - 1000 points.
That's all I can reccomend, though I have spent a decent bit of time on Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels
Wiiware is much more interesting, to me at least.
World of Goo - 1500 points
Swords & Soldiers - 1000 points

Lost Winds - 1000 points
Lost Winds 2 - 1000 points
Phoenix Wright - 1000 points
