There's no official timeline for the games. And any timeline you hear from people online is all speculation. There's as many timelines made up by people as there are Zelda games themselves. So you might as well just either play the games as they originally came out or in whatever order you choose.
Personally, I find the Zelda series to have a good track record when it comes to quality of games and sequels improving on the previous titles. So playing the games as they came out would be your best bet. And you can't go wrong starting with the original Legend of Zelda, which is still to this day one of the best Zelda games.
