PS3 probably won't be a winner in this format war. Will there be a PS4? Probably So. Will it be a $600 system? Probably not because the transition to HD will have been made by that point. Was the Xbox a failure? Absolutely - brought the company several billion in the hole. Did M$ release another system? Of course it did. Now the 360 is finally starting to turn a profit. Sony's stock price continues to rise and as long as that's happening, I don't think Sony is quitting after 6 months of a console launch. We can see that companies can go bipolar between failure and success as with Sony. Nintendo can last a while with games being all about the controller, but if they get too comfortable with that success and have no plans to get back to gameplay, then they could have some problems too.

EDIT:  Do we have any accurate information about how well the PS3 is doing to the Xbox in Europe?

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
