To be clear..

Take Nintendo DS and PSP for exampel. The DS has gone from being just the DS, to DSi and soon to 3DS. All is within "this gen". PSP has had 1000-3000, and even a "futuristic" DD only PSP Go. These are the types of upgrades i see for the Consoles this gen. But that isn't really "next gen".

1. Handhelds are different. Always have been. The same logic fails and fails hard when it has been applied to consoles in the past.

2. 3DS is the next handheld, it is not a part of the DS line.

Ultimately Sony and Microsoft need new hardware entirely if either side wants a chance at taking back the lion's share of the market. Natal is defintely only a forerunner, and not a product that Microsoft is trying to really succeed with. Natal is the Xbox, Natal's successor will be the 360. Both of them need new hardware and a new approach if they want to break out.

Nintendo has more obvious needs, but i think the pace of technology will match the three of them roughly. Holidays 2011 for Microsoft and Nintendo, early 2012 for Sony.
