Revenue is important for one thing: it shows how much money customers are willing to spend on your stuff. Now you can say this is not very meaningful, and I don't know whether I'd agree or not, but it's certainly not meaningless!
From the financial standpoint, net profit is more important of course, and from the standpoint of competition, absolute sales numbers are more important.
