I agree with you about FF13's battle system, graphics, and even the fact that the villains were lame. They had zero personality. Still, I loved it. As for games that are similar, I'm not exactly sure what I can recommend. FF13 is pretty unique.
Here's my attempt, though:
-Infinite Undiscovery
Recommended because it has a fast paced battle system and your party acts independent of you. They heal when you need to be healed and attack when you need to attack.
Not recommended because it lacks a lot of polish. Graphics are only average. Storyline is cliche.
-Magna Carta 2
Recommended because the battle system is like crack! Once you learn how to chain attacks, you'll be looking for battles all of the time. Once again, you only control one character. The other two do what you suggest (heal, attack, use magic). You CAN change characters on the fly, though. Side quests are given out in a similar fashion as FF13. Graphics are very good.
Not recommended because the story once again is cliche. The characters are likable but there's a disconnect because of the presentation. There are a few too many tutorials and two "out of place" puzzles.
-Final Fantasy X
Recommended because the battle system, in my opinion, is among the best in RPG history. Story and characters are top notch. Has very good villains!
Not recommended because the battle system is very different from FF13. I feel that the battle system is what draws you into FF13 so the change may turn you off.
-Final Fantasy X-2
Recommended because the battle system is once again very fast paced and fun! The characters are awesome, too.
Not recommended because it will make you feel like a sissy. Plus, you should play FFX first. If you don't, much of FFX-2's story will be lost on you.
-Lost Odyssey
Recommended because, of the RPG's I've played this gen, it is the most "complete". Once again, it has an above average story, amazing presentation, and awesome battle system. Plus, it's pretty straight forward in it's execution. You'll never get lost (but hopefully, you WILL get "Lost" if you know what I mean).
Not recommended because the battle system is great but is more traditional than FF13.
These are the ones I can recommend, personally. If any of them catch your attention, I suggest going to IGN or something and watching a video review. I enjoyed each of them.
