Asimov, Herbert, P.K. Dick have been mentionned in this thread.
I would add Van Vogt, Vance (the worlds this guy build, it's unbelievable) in the short list of the "greatest".
I do love the first books of Eddings (even if i don't classify him as a "greatest")
PS : i am french and i can't give english books titles, sorry.
