On the day of court, she was sitting beside him. She lied to the judge, saying that he had taken anger management classes and that she was pregnant with his child. The case was dismissed. All she could say to me was, "I'm sorry". And, inevitably, he beat her up again.

Perhaps deep down she was a masochist?

That has to be it.  Or I was a terrible lover.  One or the other.
