most of the new tech needed for 3D is in the glasses - TVs really only need a true 120Hz mode (there were some with simple picture duplictation before - that's not true 120Hz), the ability to synchronize with the glasses over infra-red and HDMI 1.4 (for 1080p 3D). that's all pretty inexpensive tech already, but companies are obviously smart and only give their new premium sets the 3D treatment, which is why these sets enter the market at normal premium TV price
