You purchase hardware in order to play software. Sony launched a console at $600 with a terrible launch lineup. That is not a deal. Selling at a loss was necessary because they decided to shove $800 worth of tech down the mostly unwilling throats of the consumer. They figured a slight discount would make it more palatable. It didn't.
It hasn't been the cheapest Blu-Ray player for a long time. Here's one for $98, in July of last year.
