I like my personal liberties and incredibly stable constitution, thanks anyway.
Way too many rules and far too much socialism over there. My family left the "old world" for a reason
As far as the 1 world government thing, no way would I want anything like that. As a citizen of the USA, soon to be constitutional lawyer, gun owner, and one who appreciates the full extent of free speech, I want nothing to do with the EU except friendship and trade.
I'm not willing to give up the level of personal liberty I have just so the world can hold hands and feel safer and better about itself.
I sincerely doubt it would ever happen anyway. Our government would never give up its sovereignty, and in the billion to 1 chance of that happening in all likelyhood the people would revolt.
I'm happy for the EU if that's what the EU wants, my guess is this is going to go through a lot of growing pains, though. War, governments wanting to separate from the union, individuals not recognizing the sovereignty of the EU, not to mention brutally raping any hole in the constitution. It took us a revolution and a few hundred Supreme Court trials to get ours down to a pretty solid setup.
Hell, we don't even want a North American Union here, so a bunch of people across the pond stand even less of a chance.
*Superchunk, it probably wouldn't start out with our Bill of Rights. We're the only country that has freedom speech (except death threats on the president, for obvious security reasons) and expression**. No way would the EU allow us to have guns, either.
**Absolute, unbridged freedom of speech. As they tell you day 1 in civil liberties law: you're either in favor of freedom of speech precisely for the people you find reprehensible (neo nazis, KKK, holocaust deniers, dickheads in general), or you're not in favor of freedom of speech.
