Best ever is Diablo 2 of course...
Like others have said, i dont think God of War, Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry are Hack and Slash games, they are beat'em ups.
Hack and slash games are Diablo likes as Titan Quest, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and others...
I know Wikipedia is not really a reference but it seems to agree with the fact that hack'n'slash games are Action RPGs like Diablo.
