How does Nintendo manage to do it so often

I think it's Nintendo's willingness to step back every once in a while and say "Cool, but will it/can it be any fun?" and if the answer is no, then they drop it. Focus on gameplay and fun factor vs epicness is a win. Whether I like it better or not doesn't matter in the context of the question.
