"If it were to control mainly modern games?" That's funny considering the PS3 controller has kept the same basic design, and I find it quite perfect for "modern gaming." As do millions.
Those who can't see inspiration from the DS controller in every controller since, except motion controls, is either biased or blind. It's pretty obvious. Even the GC controller drew inspiration from it. The others have just had a few tweaks to make them different. However, it's funny to note how they have gotten closer to the actual DS over the years. All already had 2 analog sticks and 2 hand grips. The original X-Box only had 2 shoulder buttons, but this gen the 360 now has 4 just like the DS (as well as having the analog buttons). They even changed the first X-Box controller to have a form factor closer to the DS when the original was panned as a horrible controller. And there's no way anyone with a sane mind can deny the similarities between the Wii Classic controller and it. The original version looked quite a bit like it, but this new iteration is almost an exact "copy." I don't have a problem with it, as the DS was excellently designed. It's basic form has lasted over 3 gens, and will probably continue onward for more. And all of these other controllers I see as paying omage to it, but with their own little tweaks.
