My families black lab has the same thing - it is sad as the entertainment room is downstairs, and you can tell he wants to go downstairs, but you know he is in a lot of pain if he tries to go down the stairs, so he just lies at the top of the stairs... He is getting worse as well, I will probably be in the same boat as you in a year or two.
