That's the stealthy way of saying "we kicked him out."  They don't want to look like the bad guys, so they make it seem like they did everything in a kind and gentle manner, but it doesn't change the fact that he was made to leave the group without his own consent.

Really, it sounds like you might be defending an organization you've been a part of, here.  Don't.
