Sony took the Condoleeza Rice approach to the merest hint of there possibly one day maybe being piracy achievable through the Other OS feature. i.e. they chose not to wait for the smoking gun (actual illegal activity) and went to war with the CFW/Homebrew/FSM folks and the pirates when there may not have been any need for a war.

They could have simply released a statement saying that if the Other OS feature on the phat gets used for illegal software activity then they will do a FW release to remove it from all systems. Fire off a warning shot and wait with the FW bomb poised and ready for release at a moment's notice. Often a deterrent is as effective as direct action.

By trying to lock the door they just drew the attention of the lock pickers and gave them an enticing challenge. The irony being that 3.21 may end up leading to CFW/homebrew/piracy on PS3 sooner than would have been the case if they left the phats as is.

I haven't updated my phat yet. But mostly because I haven't tried to log in to PSN. If 3.21OO comes out before I feel inclined to get onto PSN, and it's fairly straight forward to install then I might just do it for no other reason than to thumb my nose at Sony's ridiculous reaction to this whole situation.

Good post. Why can't more people here have brains like you do? Oh the humanity.
