I think the end of this generation will be where games take a place next to films in the media industry and people start realising that games are not just for kids. The industry has seen that for a while but it's taking time for the general public to realise it also, then they can stop with all the "video games are killing our kids and making them violent" crap and start actually looking after their kids rather than sitting them down with Call of Duty as a babysitter.
I think people already realise what is aimed at kids, it reflects with the success of the Wii, but people still buy their kids 18 rated games without a second thought then complain when "little timmy" starts swearing and taking an interest in combat knives.
Games wise this genre's been really dull in my opinion, it's all about polish and graphics rather than innovation and excitement. Theres no real "must own" games because nearly all of them incorperate mechanics or playstyles seen in other games. Past generations all had their innovative and stand out titles that defined things for the industry to come and were genuinely exciting, nowadays most games are just clones of things that already exist and just don't have the WOW factor games like the old Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Sonic, Duke Nukem, Tekken and Final Fantasy games had.
We need more Wii Sports, Little big planet, Heavy Rain, Shadowrun and Mirrors Edge style games that attempt to push boundaries and bring out new playstyles rather than all these sequels and games that just polish off what we've already seen and done a million times. I think console gaming future may lie in MMOs.
And FFS...... having an ending where you either die or can sacrifice yourself to save the world is neither shocking or innovative, I'm sick of it!!!!!!!!!!!

Well there's some but the problem is people dont buy them. Valkyria Chronicles, Demon Soul's, Final Fantasy is different as in they changed the mechanics whether people like it is a different story they try to evolve it more than others, they have to be safe, because they still need $$. OBv people buy FF. Mass Effect Is another good example. Mixing Genres. Hell Bioshock is a really good example.
