They certainly don't make hardware like they used to. Last year, i found my SNES, Mega drive (genesis) and Master System (google it, young whippersnappers), which had been sitting in my parents garage gathering dust, spiderwebs and wasps nests. All three systems and all games for them worked perfectly.
That said, I think my Wii is looking like it's going to break soon, sometimes when you put discs in it makes strange whirring/clicking noises and the lens doesn't seem to like dual layer or scratched discs, and I often have to eject and reinsert game discs. Although, I have put my Wii through tormet that no console should have to endure, my friends move it when it's turned on, and constantly pull it off whatever surface it is on due to using GC controllers, I've stepped on it numerous times.
GC works perfectly
