GT5:P alone almost sold 5 Million on a userbase (launch) of about 10-12 million, and its widely considered as a demo for 40$ (now less of course)
GT3 sold almost 15 Million on a 13 Million userbase (launch)
And these are the things GT5 has:
- Online
- Nascar
- Damage
- 5 Years since a "real" Gran Turismo
- No pirating to deal with
- a much bigger userbase than the best selling GT (13 vs. ~38 million)
Things that are going against GT:
- more racing games, but only one good selling one (Racesim) which isnt on the PS3 (Forza 3)
- GTs name was harmed due to GT:PSP
IMO: 10 Million is a give
15 million is a possibility if the final product doesnt dissapoint (has to be 90+)
