GT have a long heritage does that make it the best? No, does it make it the best in some peoples eyes because of it yes. Some will focus more on the sim others on the fun which is why in my opinion you cannot have a correct answer.
The best racing sim on a console for me is FM3 mainly because it had elements of fun whilst still a sim (Also because I am not a Playstation owner). I certainly liked Burnout for all out fun though.
As for GT5 the jury is still out but it too will try and bridge the gap between serious and fun only time (and the game actually being released) will prove if they have achieved this.
