Great choice on the 360! Get yourself that recharable battery, it's a money saver!
As for games, it seems to me that you are a bit old school, so I would highly suggest the Sega Collection that features like 30+ genesis games. Also geometry wars retro evovled 2 *MOAN*. Puzzle Quest is a fun rpg/puzzle game... surprisingly addictive!
Beyond all of that, I have found that for single player I have put the most time into the following games: Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect 1&2, Too Human, Crackdown, Ninety-Nine Nights, and Oblivion. Each of those games should yield at the minimum 40hrs and on the upper end several hundred hrs of gameplay.
Also, as a side note, since your a new owner you might not know one of the more nifty features of the console.. My favorite one by far is the ability to stream music from your PC or NAS directly to the system whenever you want. This is sweet since you do not need to install any music or software on the 360, you just go to the dashboard and my music and find it through the network or you hit the center button on the controller and find it in the mini-blade system. It only takes moments and it can make any game that much funner!
