In the worst case scenario. If the precedent opens the floodgates, people with either make claims based on their country's consumer protection laws or launch class action suits on similar premises. That's just the legal front. The refund opens the floodgate to others to do the same which could result in several retailers being out of pocket and their natural response would be for Sony to foot the bill.
Now that alone, if it ammounts to millions, could make Sony think twice about releasing a PS4 or about even how long the support the PS3 for, possibly even liquidating that part of SCE.
However if Sony refuses to refund retailers, this would result in legal action from them, including a possible refusal to carry any and all Sony products. In countries where there are retail associations and lobby groups, it could result in losses of revenues on an national and even possibly a continental basis. This in turn would have a dire effect on stock prices, which wuld only fuel a downward spiral. Like I said, this has the potential to bury the Playstation brand and nail the coffin shut if Sony don't start taking careful note of the underlying legalities.
