Sony did the right thing, and I'm sure it must have pissed Sony off that they had to remove other OS. The security compromises that the other OS created could have caused people to lose their credit card info or personal info.
I really don't know why people praise hackers, but the damage they cause all over the world should not be tolerated on any level, losing your identity of having a credit card zapped is f'ed up, guys like geohot could not careless.
