I've always wondered why anyone cares whether cinematics are pre-rendered or not. As long as the in game graphics are still good what is the problem with pre-rendered cut scenes looking even better?

Well this is the HD generation, people bought these systems to see the GPU's spew out insane visuals, not play back videos of what the game could have looked like on Development Kits. If you're going to do your cutscenes as video, at least do them properly and make them on a Halo Wars/FFXIII level.

It's also a problem when people start claiming those videos are real-time or use the "in game engine" when the truth is the only time they could have ever been in game is on a piece of hardware that will never be sold at retail.

Also a big issue is when people cherry pick it's relevance to specific games, but not others when it suits them. I don't care which they chose, but at least be consistant across games. If you're going to say AW got pre-rendered cut-scenes that's fine, but it has to apply to Uncharted 2 as well and vice versa if you consider them real-time.

I agree with most of that and FFXIII is probably the best example of the point I was trying to make. The in-game graphics are very good and it would obviously be impossible to replicate the quality of the pre-rendered cinematics in game and so I'm happy they are there as it enhances the games quality.

As long as the developers have made as good an effort as can be expected (and we have to accept that dev time and cost will be a limiting factor here) with the in-game engine I have no problem with cut-scenes being pre-rendered. After all, I don't care how the quality is achieved as long as it is there.
