Gamer isn't someone who spends money on gaming (plenty of gamers are pirates) but someone who calls gaming a hobby, and maybe even a part of his life.

Since when? That's just a definition created to be exclusive. There's no reason to exclude people who game just because you don't think they game enough. Personally I can't wait for the word "gamer" to be as redundant as the phrase "movie watcher".
