Not sure.  While it is probably against the ToS for him to open and modify his PS3, it is not illegal for him to spread information on the process.  I'm pretty sure the Freedom of Information Act or Free Speech in general would protect him from any legal action regarding him telling people how to hack.

But to provide this 'hack' as a download for people in the future could potentially harm Sony finanically, which my non law degree would say is illegal without the protection of the constitution. So I would assume something like this would be something he should keep on the down low. oh well

Actually distributing some sort of hack file may be illegal.  I'm no lawyer.  I just know releasing written instructions or anything like that he should be safe.
