Agreed. I know in the past before trophies I use to play a non-multiplayer game only one time and be done with it. The only story based game I remember playing more than one time was Resident Evil 4.
I would still try to play my all games to completion though by getting all the gold medals in racing games, characters in fighting games, items, weapons, upgrades, summons, defeat optional bosses, max out stats in RPG's, etc, but it was always on my own terms.
I guess the drive was always there to do everything I could think of or unlock everything there was to unlock. But now we get to do more specific things the developer wants to challenge us to do with trophies on their terms. It's added a lot of replay value getting me to play lots of story based games more than one time this generation.
However the only con I feel with trophies is once I achieve platinum in a multi-player game that I enjoyed like Battlefield Bad Company 2 then not having any more trophies to collect kind of pushes me to move onto the next game. In this way lack of new trophies acts as a de-incentive to play. Even though that is a game I could potentially play for years because the online experience always changes. Hopefully lots of DLC with new trophies for BBC2 will keep me returning for more.
