Initially I didn't care much for either, but they've grown on me. I don't really care about the totals, but Trophies have helped me get more out of games than I once did. For example, the Trophies in Uncharted made me experiment far more with melee combat during my second playthrough, while during my first I stuck solely to shooting. The game ended up being more enjoyable as a result, as I forced myself to vary things up.
Other than that, I only like Trophies because of the ability to compare your progress in a game to that of a friend. They're a sign of how much time I've spent with the game compared to others, and they can often be a sign of how much each person enjoys each game. I like checking to see how somebody else compares to my 60% of Trophies earned in LBP, for example.
So far only one game has made me want to earn Trophies, and that is Demon's Souls, if only so I can say "Yeah, I Platinum'd Demon's Souls. ;)"
