I'd like to know how you can claim a proper spelling of a translation from a different language.  And lots of very old words had variant spellings back in the day. 

Also, Wikipedia has a very different account of the origin of the "k", though your group may have arrived at it differently. 

It's a variant of spelling, as you said. Plus if you pay attention to the wikipedia article it is said that Aleister Crowley did not invent the underlying idea behind the K spelling, he just used it to differentiate it from the common misconceptions that the word Magic represented.
