First, download and install the Stalker Complete 2009 mod. It improves the graphics and fixes a ton of bugs while keeping the core game completely intact.
Second, treat it like a stealth game. Enemies are tough as nails and you're a weak little girly-man, so don't fight when you don't absolutely need to.
Those two tips are the best ways to enjoy the flawed gem that is Shadow of Chernobyl.
