“There is a certain enemy in Final Fantasy XIII that we developed called the scale beast” or at least that’s what it was called during development. “We ran into a serious problem with this monster. We found that during gameplay when the player would bring this monster to a stagger that all of its scales would pop off its body.” After fighting with the programming and the models for a while, Yuji Abe began to have a change of heart. “We decided to keep this bug in the game. After some cleanup and some programming adjustments this scale popping effect turned out to be an enjoyable animation that we never intended.”
