If you really need a 6-core, but can't afford $1000, get the Thuban quad-core coming about May. 2.8GHz (3.3GHz Turbo) at ~$200 or 3.2GHz (3.6GHz Turbo) at ~$300.
But you're probably better off with a fast quad-core for desktop apps, an i5 750 or Phenom II X4 if you can't go above $180.
The $1000 Intel Extreme Editions are very poor value, but they are fast.
