^ Actually you will be forced to update with some newer game, even if you never again attempt to log in into PSN.
The first time you run into a PS3 game that you cannot play on your PS3, Sony's product doesn't correspond to the description it was sold to you under, and at least under EU law you have a pretty firm footing.
