It makes almost no sense to do this, particularly if the sole purpose is to prevent hacking/modding. Why not simply do what MS does and ban people who go online with their hacked PS3 ? All this update will accomplish is pissing a bunch of legitimate users off, while those who are intending to mod (whenever this becomes possible... say in a year or two) their PS3 simply wont update anyways. And those writing the hacks/mods (If they do indeed use Linux for this) certainly won't update their console. Its a no win situation, and makes no sense from Sony's standpoint. I don't think it's an april fools' joke. Firstly, it's too early for April's fool. Secondly, I don't think they dare to joke around with a public announcement.
