Edit sorry this is old news I am bad at multitasking. mods lock this one please.
Everyone’s favourite industry analyst Michael Pachter has appeared in a further Pach-Attack episode, over on Gametrailers.com, in which he responds to a question as to whether Sony should pull the plug on their PSP handheld device, considering the PSP Go failed, and with both Apple and Nintendo retaining the largest portion of market share.
Whilst commending Sony for aiming to capture the older audience with more serious titles in comparison to the more cartoony nature of that seen within the Nintendo DS library, he believes that the PSP is “way more robust as a device than perhaps most consumers are ready for.”
The initial price point of the PSP Go has often been a particularly sore point, and with it being a far higher price than an iPod touch as well as the fact that most PSP games cost far more than those available through iTunes, Pachter feels that Sony aren’t being competitive enough to try and pull some of the market over to them. Alongside this, Pachter believes that Nintendo have “a huge cost advantage on the DS. I mean they’re $129, and it’ll probably cost them $79 to make – so they can cut that price anytime they feel like it.”
However, Pachter reveals that the bottom line is that he feels that “Sony is running into a brick wall to compete in that sector.” Whilst he believes that they aren’t giving up, and that we’ll see a PSP-4000, 5000 and 6000 most likely, he hopes that the price point will be lowered and that games will be reduced in cost for the consumer.
