It looks like Gears of War.  Whats special about how this looks relative to every other futuristic FPS game?

i don't see the bulky guys with chainsaws and blood everywhere + aliens and gritty atmosphere.

not the character design, but the overall greyed out look of it. 

I really dont understand the appeal of a colorless game, unless its a stylistic choice like MadWorld.

It's called "realistic"

A colorful WWII shooter for example simply doesn't work because it destroys the atmosphere.

This game is far from colorless like Gears of War. It has a metallic look, but again what do you expect ? That someone paints the metal parts in blue, orange and pink ?

no,  grey worlds are not realistic and never were.

Bombing out a place still doesnt make everything grey and white.
